Eight wins, four golds, and a rematch flipped at QLD States

The 2026 QJJC Queensland State Championship was held on the Gold Coast on 25–26 July. Matstories recorded 1,529 athletes, 1,929 finished matches, 638 divisions, and competitors linked to 171 academies.

The full results are on the event page. These are a few parts of the weekend that stood out when we compared the results with earlier Australian competitions.

Cairns and Davies ran it back four weeks later

At the end of June, Troy Davies of Lemos BJJ beat Aaron Cairns of BJJ Lotus Club on points at the South Pacific Championship. Master 3 brown belts. Middleweight.

They met again at QLD States in the same belt, age class, and weight division. This time Cairns won by submission. Their Cairns vs Davies page shows both results side by side.

Matstories found 106 pairs at the event who had a previous recorded meeting. Ninety-three were adult matchups. That is useful context before looking at any ranking or rating: two athletes can have a similar number beside their names and still have a very specific history with each other.

Four unbeaten runs worth checking

Laura Graham from Studio 55 went 8–0 across white-belt no-gi and the gi and no-gi absolutes. She collected four gold medals. Matstories has no earlier finished match for Graham, so this was her first recorded event in the index. That does not necessarily mean it was her first competition; Matstories’s older coverage is still incomplete.

Lucas Jolly of CAZA BJJ went 7–0 in white-belt no-gi and the absolute, with all seven wins recorded as submissions. Travis Morgan of SJJA Team went 8–0 across purple-belt gi, no-gi, and the absolute. Satoru Schwalger from TA Byron Bay went 7–0 at blue, six of them finishes.

First recorded appearances at a new belt

Matstories recorded 24 athletes competing at grey belt for the first time in its index. It also found seven first recorded appearances at blue belt, three at purple, two at brown, and one at black. These figures only compare events currently covered by Matstories.

Aden Grajzman of Complete MMA went 9–0 in Pee Wee II grey, gi and no-gi. Theo Taylor of SJJA went 7–0 and finished every match.

Alice Grostein of Rhythm Jiu Jitsu had her first black-belt matches recorded by Matstories at this event. Harry Thomas of CAZA and Finn Fifield of Team Lead had their first blue-belt appearances in the index. These are small details, but they give a much clearer picture of an athlete’s progress than a career total on its own.

Southside brought the largest team

Southside BJJ brought the largest recorded squad with 159 athletes. The team finished with 205 wins and 62 gold medals. Galeb BJJ had the second-largest squad with 92 athletes.

SJJA brought 68 athletes and recorded 116 wins and 38 golds. TA Byron Bay brought 43 athletes and recorded 85 wins and 33 golds. That is a strong return for a team less than one-third the size of Southside’s squad.

These numbers count athletes linked to each academy in Matstories, and some athletes have more than one gym link. They should be read as recorded totals rather than an official team championship table. The Queensland gym board provides more ways to compare results, including win rate, finish rate, and wins per athlete.

Six hundred and thirty-nine athletes at QLD States have no earlier finished match in Matstories. Some were first-time competitors, while others competed before Matstories’s current coverage begins. This is why the site uses “first recorded” instead of claiming every one was a debut.
